Eustis Street Burying Ground, Roxbury (Established 1630)
(1988-1989)
This cemetery, also known as the Eustis Street Burying Ground and the Old Roxbury Burying Ground, was established in 1630. It is one of the three oldest of Boston’s historic burying grounds and the oldest in Roxbury. Near the Eustis Street entrance is the Dudley family tomb for early Colonial governors. Those buried here include Gov. Thomas Dudley, Gov. Joseph Dudley, Chief Justice Paul Dudley and Colonel William Dusley. The Minister’s or Parish Tomb contains the site’s name sake, John Eliot, and five later ministers of the First Church of Roxbury.
There are hundreds of slate grave markers along with a number of table top and vaulted tombs, small monuments and obelisks adorned with images of angels, hourglasses, floral and geometric patterns, intricate lettering and unique prose.
Historic Boston oversaw restoration of the graveyard’s gate and comprehensive gravestone conservation on behalf of the Boston Parks and Recreation Department in 1988. Today, as neighbor to the site, HBI will provide additional support for preservation and maintenance, including daily access to the cemetery between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.
