What We Do

Historic Neighborhood Centers

The Historic Neighborhood Centers program promotes economic revitalization in Boston’s diverse commercial districts using the tools of historic preservation and real estate development.

Program components include:

  • Surveys to identify and evaluate key historic resources and help to form the basis for educational and civic engagement initiatives;

  • Technical assistance to property and business owners to solve critical building repair and preservation needs;

  • Targeted investments that enhance cultural resources (such as parks and public art) and build awareness of local history;

  • Pre-development planning for priority rehabilitation projects;

  • Completion of redevelopment projects that rehabilitee pivotal structures whose poor condition detracts from the quality of life and economic vitality of the community.

To implement this groundbreaking program, HBI has partnered with Boston Main Streets, the City of Boston’s nationally recognized partnership with the National Trust for Historic Preservation that is actively working to revitalize the city’s neighborhood commercial districts. Together, these groups work with community leaders to plan for preservation, launch educational initiatives and complete rehabilitation projects.

This program has been supported by The Boston Foundation and the National Trust for Historic Preservations’ Partners in the Field Program.
