APPENDIX A: DEFINITIONS OF ENTRY INFORMATION
Name: Most common name or names by which a property is known (with secondary name following in parenthesis, where applicable)
Address: Street address of the property (may differ from Assessing Dept. records)
Neighborhood: Neighborhood name in which a property is located as assigned by the Boston Redevelopment Authority
Year Built: Year(s) during which construction took place
Style: Architectural style
Architect(s): Architect, builder, or engineer
Historic Certification: Options: Individually listed in National Register of Historic Places; included in National Register District (specify); eligible for such listing; designated a Boston Landmark; included in a Chapter 40C or Landmark Conservation District
Building Sq Ft: Estimated gross floor area
Lot Sq Ft: Estimated square footage of the parcel of land on which the building sits, based upon BRA maps and/or Assessing Department records
Ward: Number assigned by the city to the section of the city in which the property is located
Parcel: Number assigned by the city to the parcel of land on which the building sits
Zoning: Zoning designation as determined by the Boston Redevelopment Authority
Current Use: Options: Vacant; leased to _____ for _____; occupied by owner for _____; (if partially used, clarify)
Condition: Assessment of physical condition based on the opinion of staff and consultant at Historic Boston:
--"Excellent" means that the physical condition of the building is like new. This is unlikely to be the case unless the
building is recently rehabilitated. By definition, none of the casebook properties is in excellent condition.
--"Good" means that the building is well maintained and that there are few visible signs of deterioration.
--"Fair" means that there are more than a few visible signs of deterioration.
--"Poor" means that the building is in an advanced stage of deterioration.
Owner: Name of entity owning property, according to Suffolk County Registry of Deeds; owner address based upon separate research
FY99 Building Assessment: Value of the building according to the city assessor
FY99 Land Assessment: Value of the land according to the city assessor, which should be based upon use and occupancy as of January 1, 1998
FY99 Tax: Amount of tax assessed for fiscal year 1999
Tax Status: Status of property tax payments owned on a property for the current fiscal year:
"Exempt" means the property is not subject to real estate taxes, because it is government owned or used to carry out
the charitable purposes of an exempt organization
"Current" means that current year's property tax has been paid in full
"Arrears" showing balance due at [date]
Preservation Strategy: A list of physical, financial, legal, entrepreneurial or bureaucratic initiatives likely to preserve a property
Significance: A narrative description of the reasons a property contributes to the City's cultural heritage and/or to the long term social, economic, and urban design vitality of its neighborhood
Preservation challenges: Fiscal, physical, legal, and/or human challenges which must be overcome before new investment is likely to occur benefiting this property
Neighborhood context: A description of the physical surroundings and planned or proposed changes, if known, that may affect the property's preservation
Other sources of information: Documents or persons with additional information regarding a property (include bibliographic reference to studies, reports, documents, etc.)
